The vaulted living room in this 1960s ranch had lots of potential, but was dominated by an uninspired existing fireplace wall.  Influenced by the owner's mix of antique and modern Swedish design, a new fireplace surround was designed to draw the eye up, lighten the space, and provide a classic backdrop for the client's collections.

On a limited budget, the existing firebox was reused but moved down on the wall. Display shelves and desks were built into both sides of the surround, providing a variety of cozy places to settle in around the new hearth.
